Rebirth of 79 CXR
Full-throttle reinvention of dark and seedy 79 CXR [closed Oct 2012] by Charles Hill, gay owner of Pleasuredome sauna. With its hybrid pub/bar feel, the tweaked look is more slick while still sufficiently dark in a sexy, cruise-friendly way, wallpapered throughout with imagery capturing the full whack of shirtless manliness (reproductions of Mike Bliss's photograph-paintings, including beefy Prince Harry). It's a sizeable space to fill, with two floors of various nooks and crannies — including red leather sofas upstairs for hanging out — and feels like Soho with an eye on Vauxhall. Check website for themed events, including bear-embracing Mondays, camp quizzes on Wednesdays and monthly sporting social night Champion. Opened 1 November 2012.

Manbar or Sadbar?Despite the fresh(ish) new decor, I'm sad to report that this is not a friendly place. Staff are consistently rude (and sometimes quite bitchy to perfectly polite customers). And, as has been documented elsewhere, they're pretty incompetent when it comes to taking your order or handling your cash. On top of this (or maybe because of it), the place lacks any atmosphere whatsoever. It's not sexy and that's increasingly being reflected in the make-up of the dwindling 'crowd' - and I'm not talking mascara-smeared faces or caked foundation (although that would be a massive improvement). Tragic :(

Bad service and attitudeNot a friendly environment at all. All surface. When my friend asked for a manager to complain about lack of sanitary standards ie blocked sinks and toilets he was given lots of abuse and asked to leave. They snatched his drinks away and called the police. We won't be returning and my friends and colleagues will be advised to do the same.
