Caravan

Opened in 2012 and located in the then-newly-created Granary Square development a four-minute walk behind King's Cross station, Caravan is a terrifically successful and not too pricey foodie-style restaurant that also specialises in coffee, which is roasted in the basement of its Exmouth Market outlet, which opened in 2010. Caravan is the branchild of three New Zealanders who describe their food as "well-travelled". The modernised industrial space — in the same beautiful 19th-century former granary which houses Central Saint Martins school of art — is big and loud but casual and warm. There's outdoor seating that overlooks the rather fabulous and multi-coloured fountain 'installation', and it's best to book ahead. A third outlet, Caravan Bankside (30 Great Guildford St SE1 0HS), near Tate Modern and Southwark theatre the Menier Chocolate Factory [see entries], opened October 2016. Plus Fitzrovia (Yalding House, 152 Great Portland St), the City (22 Bloomberg Arcade) and beyond.
