YMCA Indian Student Hostel

Good-value basic-plus Indian food in a friendly setting
Started in 1920 to provide home-style comforts and food for Indian youth studying in London, this one-of-a-kind establishment also serves as a cultural centre and meeting place for civil servants and political leaders. The kitchen prepares lunch and dinner meals for those using the hostel, and the public are welcomed to join them. Choice is limited, food is dished out in canteen style and dining is a shared experience, but it's more than adequately tasty — often yummy — and distinctly inexpensive. And the atmosphere is not dull. Monday to Friday Lunch is à la carte while the daily dinner (and weekend lunch) is an all-you-can-eat buffet with a small but very good selection (£9 in 2019). The much-filmed and picturesque Georgian address Fitzroy Square is seconds away, while Soho is a seven-minute walk south. Tube station: Warren Street.

      Tasty bargain
Very good Indian food. Not foodie, but reliably good and inexpensive, and the atmosphere is buzzy-Indian.

      a real canteen
The word canteen comes from the Indian and this is the real thing. Excellent value.
