Anita Leroy started this business in 1978 as part of the all-natural and holistic Neal's Yard enterprise that included an apothecary, bakery, wholefood warehouse and now-famous Neal's Yard Dairy. More popular than ever — with a clientele that now appears less hippy, more hip and trendy — the Monmouth serves rich, delicious cups of coffee from sourced beans. You've never tasted filter coffee this good, and the espresso is likewise rich and yummy, with fashionable flat whites and filter shots a fixture too. There was a time in Covent Garden — a one-minute walk from Soho — when you could smell the beans roasting. But no longer, as that part of the operation has migrated southeast to a major space near Tower Bridge. Monmouth's other outlets include a buzzy retail outlet at 2 Park St, by London Bridge, in food-porn destination Borough Market [see entry]. Beans are available for purchase, as are the single-cup porcelain filters which Leroy introduced to London in the late 1970s. There's also a takeaway-only location at Spa Terminus, at Unit 4 Discovery Estate, Bermondsey, between Dockley Rd and Spa Rd, near the Tower Bridge mothership ( Friday and Saturday 9am—4pm).
