City of Quebec

(68 Ratings)
Gay antiquity for the cruising older gentleman and his followers

One of London's oldest traditional gay pubs, attracting one of London's oldest gay clienteles, the Quebec has been referred to both affectionately and sneeringly as the 'Elephant's Graveyard'. This is an impressively large and provincial-feeling establishment on two floors,  including a music-themed basement (Fridays, Saturdays and occasional Thursdays) where younger men dance to retro chart hits. As of August 2023 there's drag-hosted bingo on Thursdays. Food menu includes pizzas, sandwiches, toasties and more, including a full-on weekend brunch (11am–3pm). And there's a beer garden. Established 1946.

The Quebec is no longer a gay venue. Greene King brewery, its owner, has decidedly changed the Quebec into a straight venue with constant loud music upstairs, closure of the basement disco, female bartenders, elimination of drag shows, removal of rainbow stickers or any gay identifiers, etc. Despite assurances of its owners that the refurbishment would not change the future of this historic gay pub, they have done just that: Anthony Hemmerdinger, managing director of Greene King Local Pubs, said: "We are very proud of the legacy that the City of Quebec holds, as are our customers. Therefore, we wish to ensure them that the pub has a long-term future. This pub has a heritage as one of London’s oldest gay pubs and we want to create a new look space inside that is welcoming and inclusive to all." Nice try Anthony. On top of all that, the service is horrible. I urge the removal of this establishment from GayCities.

Bar for older crowd

The city of Québec tends to attract an older crowd. This pub style environment features a downstairs basement bar that usually has a DJ spinning where is the upstairs is more of a quiet pub atmosphere.
