A particular favourite of London's cake cognescenti, this French-English-hybrid patisserie dating back to 1871 is the domain of charming and effusive trained actress Michele Wade, who worked here as a 'Saturday girl' in the 1970s and bought the business in the mid-1980s. Go early in your trip because you'll want to return here, either for mid-morning danish, French almond croissants, pain au raisin etc .or for mid-afternoon cakes (esp the Paris Brest, mille feuille, tarte au citron, fruit almond slices etc.).

This place is like stepping back to Britain 'in' the 50s 'in' a sweet provincial village. The best tea 'in' London, and great for celeb spotting. Also very gay
