Two or three minutes northeast of Soho, this immaculate, well-designed and efficiently run multi-level gym 'factory' draws a crowd of local workers and Soho boys, with an atmosphere that's more no-nonsense and subtly sexy than steamy, full-on and flashy. Its myriad facilities include an impressive 25-meter heated pool, indoor cycling, badminton courts and a huge choice of reasonbaly priced classes. Refurbished in 2009. Day passes are available (£10 in 2022). Recommended. Closest tube stations: Tottenham Court Road, Holborn and Goodge Street.

The right balance
The YMCA offers the right balance of a mixed crowd... very gay-friendly without being too cruisey. A wide range of classes, modern equipment, a fab swimming pool and all this in the heart of London - just next to Tottenham Court Road tube station. If it had natural light, it would certainly deserve the remaining half star!
