Retro Bar

(22 Ratings)
An alternative to Soho

Tucked in an alley just south of the Strand and an eight-minute stroll from Soho, the Retro Bar is a warm, friendly, fun and rather indie-spirited two-floor pub decorated with framed reminders of once-hip and still-great-sounding 70s and 80s pop stars. Appeals to both men and women, and was at one time renowned for its parties leading up to and including the annual May Eurovision Song Contest. Check the website for weekly and monthly themed nights, including Tuesday quizzes hosted by Princess Julia (minimal entry charge). Tube stations: Embankment and Charing Cross.

Hidden Gem

I discovered this place quite by accident and so glad I did! A fun casual gay bar with a friendly, uplifting mix of guys and gals. Fun theme nights. It’s retro in that it optimizes what gay bars were meant to be. Turn off Grindr, leave the attitude at home and go there to chat and drink with friends you don’t know yet.

Funky and chilled

Not that easy to find, but once you are there the staff are pleasant and the walls are covered with photos of stars. A good place to start your evening or for a quiter drink.
