The London Eye

Staked at a southside edge of the Thames in a seemingly precarious but imposing position halfway between the Palace of Westminster and the Southbank Centre, the 443-feet-high London Eye (135 metres) might not appeal to an acrophobe looking for that final souvenir attraction to cap off a trip to London. But for those not so afflicted, the Eye offers a stunning bird's eye return to London landmarks conquered on land during the trip. In short, a recommended if pricey end-of-visit activity, and within walking distance of Trafalgar Square, accessed via the Golden Jubilee Bridges (linked with Hungerford Bridge), whose towering pylons appear to be siblings of the equally stylish Eye, all glistening magically after dark. Closing times vary throughout the year; best to check website. Tube station: Embankment, then walk over the bridge. Plus Waterloo and Westminster stations.
