Hayward Gallery

(3 Ratings)
Concrete slab housing big-name art exhibitions

Together with the Queen Elizabeth Hall [classical music venue], the Hayward represents all that is generally perceived as ugly and unwieldy about the riverside Southbank Centre arts complex — certain architectural purists still stand by its late-60s brutalist look — but few can argue with the Hayward's place as a giant on London's art landscape. Exhibitions last in the region of three months, and tend towards the contemporary. Closed between September 2015 and 2017 for a splendid refurbishment. Open late on Wednesday and closed on both Monday and Tuesday.
