Old Spitalfields Market

There's very little to say about Spitalfields Market except that it's a popular, slightly funky and marginally post-hippy outlet for arts and crafts, jewellery and food, particularly on Sundays (for better or worse). The market hosts antique dealers on Thursdays, with mornings preferred. The area's many local landmarks include Nicholas Hawksmoor's baroque treasure Christ Church, Spitalfields, beautiful olde-worlde Fournier Street (home of Gilbert & George) and Princelet Street, Dennis Severs' House [see entry], Brick Lane (mix of Bangali culture and, more recently, contemporary art scene) and, further afield, trendy/arty Hoxton/Shoreditch to the north and Whitechapel [see Whitechapel Gallery entry] to the south.
