Inarguably one of London's finer sandwich and food shops, Verde & Company belongs to American-born chef and caterer Harvey Cabaniss, whose shamelessly precious and anachronistic East London establishment is yet another jewel in Spitalfields's über-beautiful Fournier Street. Inarguably one of London's finer sandwich and food shops, Verde & Company belongs to American-born chef and caterer Harvey Cabaniss, whose shamelessly precious and anachronistic East London establishment is yet another jewel in Spitalfields's über-beautiful Fournier Street. The sumptuously retro decor is the vision of Cabaniss's partner (and Georgian fetishist) Tim Whittaker, who runs the Spitalfields Trust, set up in the 1970s to preserve the 18th- and 19th-century terraced jewels that make up this very atmospheric part of London. Local landmarks include Hawksmoor's Christ Church, Spitalfields, beautiful Fournier and Princelet Streets, Dennis Severs' House [see entry], Brick Lane and, further afield, trendy arty Hoxton/Shoreditch to the north and Whitechapel [with Whitechapel Gallery] to the south. Warning: the food is so good here that lunchtimes at Verde & Co are a big deal, so it's best to phone in an order ahead of time [and avoid the surcharge incurred by walking in to purchase a sandwich on the spot!]. In April 2017 Cabaniss, hit by a disastrous rise in rent and rates, moved his operation from 40 Brushfield Street to this slightly bigger and even more beautiful location. Tube station: Liverpool Street. Sadly Cabaniss closed shop in July 2017, with a Sunday to Wednesday pop-up at 11 Princelet St, around the corner. Watch this space.
