Lisboa Patisserie

Just north of Notting Hil's Portobello Rd [see market entry], Golborne Rd is known for its Moroccan and Portuguese cultural offerings, with this patisserie (linked to a deli just opposite) clearly the most known and loved establishment in the area. There's normally a queue to get a table (indoor or outdoor) or to take away any of the Portuguese specialities on offer, including London's possibly best nata (aka pastel de nata — Portugal's signature flaky-pastry custard tart, which is best had well-done and blackened) — and galão (espresso-based milky coffee served in a glass, unlike the similar chinesa). Opened in 1983 by Philippines-born Celia Gomes (with Portuguese husband Carlos), Lisboa makes literally dozens of pastries — including cheesecake, Argentino, Dina Marques, palmier, bombocado, pão de leite (milk bread) and the specially recommended white-bean feijão (though no longer made with white beans) — as well as sandwiches and other savoury options. This is not upmarket patisserie, but much of it looks and tastes authentically ethnic despite its being made nearly 1,600km from Lisbon. A 2018 interview revealed that Lisboa produces about two-and-a-half thousand natas a day (and more at the weekend). Closed Monday. Tube stations: Westbourne Park and Ladbroke Grove.
