Among London's finest sandwiches
French-owned lunch-dominant enterprise that does a killer takeaway business specialising in baguette-based sandwiches but also accommodates a (limited) number of sit-down diners. A rather small, pokey and cramped place with a big, serious and generous menu of delicious and very-home-made-tasting savouries and pastries, Rive Gauche is quite special. It has an air of the local about it, and you sense there's a lot of old-fashioned hard work going on here. Tube station: Warren Street. Local landmarks include exceptionally Georgian and lovely Fitzroy Square, University College Hospital (take the lift to the 16th floor for great views of London), shopping Tottenham Court Rd (ie Heal's and Habitat) and, just six minutes southbound, Soho. Open Mon to Fri 7.30am—3.30pm. Sadly this lovely institution closed for good on 24 June 2016 for two reasons: its lease is up and developers are licking their chops.
