1940s time-warp English café (pronounced caff) serving big portions of hot and satisfying basic food at great prices in a terrific atmosphere. Try a breakfast or lunch fry-up (e.g. egg, bacon, mushroom, fresh-grilled tomato, chips, toast and a mug of tea) or lunchtime 'dinner' such as steak & kidney pie, fish & chips or shepherd's pie. Gets busy at lunch with media locals (Channel 4 television) and builders and workmen in soiled gear. When ready to be collected, your order is belted out with stinging operatic gusto. Kinda in the middle of nowhere, but within walking distance of Tate Britain and the Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament). Opened 1946 and for years has shown up in TV dramas and feature films, most recently the Elton John biopic ROCKETMEN (2019). Borders a huge 1920s/30s chequerboard housing estate by Edwin Lutyens.
