Roti King (Euston)

Ipoh, Malaysia-raised chef Sugen Gopal moved to London with the local cuisine he'd learned from his parents. Colindale in north London was his first food outlet. Forced out by developers, he moved (in 2014) into a functional but rather atmospheric basement space a stone's throw from Euston rail/underground station, serving up a menu build round his signature dish, roti canai (pronounced 'chanai'), comprised of a bowl of gorgeous Malaysian-style dhal accompanied by two flaky-perfect rotis. In 2022, Roti King opened a second branch in an under-the-arches site at the foot of the Battersea Power Station mall development west of Vauxhall; Waterloo (97 Lower Marsh SE1 7AB) followed in early 2024. A takeaway roti canai cost about £6 for several years, pre-pandemic, but in 2014 it's up to £9 (possibly helping to bankroll the company's expansion).
