Ozone Coffee Roasters

A New Zealand-British coffee success story that started with inspired international community do-gooders Jamie Hodson (1965–2008) and Karen Hodson, who in 1998 opened a boutique roastery in the suburbs of New Plymouth, New Zealand – an idea borne out of their good works in El Salvador. In 2001 New Plymouth local Craig Macfarlane bought the business and 11 years later, following too much convoluted history to mention, opened this roastery-cum-café in a narrow street not far west of east London's arty hotspot Shoreditch, around the corner from Wesley's Chapel and just south of Old Street's so-called 'Silicon Roundabout'. It's a rather large enterprise on two floors, with a working roaster in the basement (in clear view) alongside café/bistro seating. The ground-floor space is rather grand for an artisan coffee establishment, but there are booths in which to hide while drinking an excellent latte, flat white, macchiato etc or eating from an autumnal and adventurous breakfast and lunch menu (eg chili eggs, rarebit croquettes, eggs benedict, hangi kumara, kedgeree, house-fermented hummus).
