An 1860s behemoth – 380 rooms of of modern extravagance inside a building that is more grand and bulky than elegant — located  just north of Oxford Circus, in Portland Place, where Marylebone meets Fitzrovia. The interior looks decidedly different from when it first opened. An £80m upgrade in 2009 was the latest in an exhaustive chronology of the hotel's various transformations (and functions). Its traditional style dominates both the main building (300 rooms) and its 20th-century extension (83 rooms). As of 2022, prices don't appear to dip below £500 per night, but Soho, Oxford St shopping and nearly everything else that is central are within luxuriantly easy reach. Wellness features include the Chuan Spa, a 16m pool, a state-of-the-art gym and more. The hotel also boasts a CV of singlular history and innovations, including its pronouncement as the birthplace of the afternoon tea in 1865. Previous guests include Oscar Wilde, Noël Coward, Winston Churchill, Wallis Simpson, Jean Sibelius and Diana, Princess of Wales.
