BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival (21–31 March)
The 33rd edition of Britain's most established and attended film festival (renamed BFI Flare in 2014), devoted to LGBT themes, issues and concerns, this year with more than 50 features and more than 80 shorts covering the ever expanding spectrum of representation and experiences, plus special events, guest appearances, discussions and workshops. Plus the fourth annual Big Gay Film Quiz. And post-film club events (Fri 22, Sat 23, Fri 29, Sat 30 and Sun 31 March).
The festival opens with Chanya Button’s period drama VITA & VIRGINIA, charting the passionate relationship between troubled literary maverick Virginia Woolf (1882–1941) and enigmatic aristocrat and writer Vita Sackville-West (1892–1962), starring Elizabeth Debicki (THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., WIDOWS) and Gemma Arterton (TAMARA DREWE, PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME) respectively.
The festival closes with the European premiere of Justin Kelly’s JT LEROY, adapted from Savannah Knoop’s memoir Girl Boy Girl: How I Became JT LeRoy, about the most compelling literary “hoax’” of our generation., starring Laura Dern and Kristen Stewart.
Among the eclectic range of films on offer is the UK premiere of documentary film-maker Tomer heymann's JONATHAN AGASSI SAVED MY LIFE – an illuminating portrait of gay porn superstar Jonathan Agassi, capturing both his highs and his lows. Other hyped features include Ondi Timoner's MAPPLETHORPE, starring former Doctor Who Matt Smith as iconic and controversial New York photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–89). Plus documentaries about four-time Academy Award nominee and Hollwyood hunk and actor Montgomery Clift (1920–66) and US fashion designer Halston (1932–90).
Last year's BFI Flare saw a substantial increase in accreditation with 299 Industry delegates from 17 countries outside the UK: Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Myanmar, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States. 798 guests attended BFI Flare industry events over the ten-day festival.
