The Roundhouse

Built in 1847 as an engine shed (or roundhouse) for the London and Birmingham Railway but used for such purposes for only a decade, the Roundhouse was reinvented as an arts establishment in 1964, host to adventurous stage productions and pop concerts (the Doors, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, David Bowie). Fortunes changed and the Roundhouse was shut down in 1983, but following decades of inactivity and lack of funding and inspiration, reopened in 2006 following extensive works. Now firmly back on the map and a major draw for new generations of arts consumers, the impressive and rather stylish venue specialises in big-scale productions, from circus shows to Grace Jones, accommodating up to 3,300 people. Local landmarks include Camden Market and dozens of drinking and music establishments, and olde-worlde Chalk Farm/Primrose Hill. Tube stations: Chalk Farm or Camden Town.
