Curzon Chelsea (Closed Permanently) Formerly: Chelsea Cinema

Formerly the domain of arthouse giant Artificial Eye, this very pleasant movie house boasts the largest screen outside the West End and is situated on the King's Road — the once countercultural catwalk that these days kowtows to popular fashion and consumerism and its dedicated followers. Now safe in the hands of the high-quality Curzon chain with Artificial Eye serving as distributor, the cinema programmes indie, foreign and "quality" Hollywood films. Both SEX AND THE CITY and THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE played here in 2009. The recommended Saatchi Gallery [see entry] is minutes away, as are the excellent department store Peter Jones, Holy Trinity in Sloane St [Edward Burne Jones/ William Morris-stained-glass-window alert] and Oscar Wilde's former residence in Tite St. Tube station: Sloane Square. Other Curzon movie houses can be found in Mayfair, Soho, Bloomsbury (2015 renovation), Victoria (opened May 2014) and Aldgate (January 2017). This Curzon closed on 31 March 2018, was demolished (save the art deco-style facade) in 2019, and has yet to open in its new three-screen incarnation.
