Clone Zone (CZ) (Soho) *

Formerly: American Retro

Two floors of gay erotica
In November 2012 Clone Zone created this flagshop store in the premises previously occupied by long-running but now-defunct American Retro, located less than a minute down the street from Clone Zone's original store at 64 Old Compton St, which closed in January 2013. A relative veteran of Soho's gay scene, Clone Zone specialises in all gay-friendly consumer goods, with the old shop selling gifts, books and clothing (Barcode, Addicted, Redskins etc) and this new and bigger venue offering different lines of designer sportswear and other gay-appeal apparel (ES, Cell Block, Gaudì, Pistol Pete) while stretching the brief to include sex toys and fetish gear. In 2010 Clone Zone changed the sign outside its stores to CZ to distance itself from the 1970s/80s idea of a clone, though one could argue that bears are the new clones. Other CZ locations include former gay ghetto Earl's Court — which created a fetish-specialist basement in November 2014 — and, up north, Birmingham and Manchester.
