Liberty

19th-century purveyor of fabrics, ornaments and objets d'art located since 1924 in a striking tudor revival building in the northwestern corner of Soho, overlooking Carnaby St. Especially popular with women and gays, Liberty has expanded its designer fashions department — there's a tasty and tasteful basement men's section — and caters to those seeking lovely and decorative gift-type goods in an aesthetically pleasing space. However, modern environmentally friendly lighting does this olde-world building no justice — the atmosphere surely has suffered — and these and other changes have not met with universal enthusiasm, but Liberty remains a special one-off London store. In June 2016 the store staged the private AfterParty for the premiere of Mandie Fletcher's ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS: THE MOVIE (2016). Main entrance is in Great Marlborough St. Tube station: Oxford Circus.
