Proper German sausages and excellent fries that give fast food a good name, thanks to the efforts of southwestern Germans Florian Frey and Azadeh Falakshahi (a him and a her), who in 2005 left the Black Forest for Brighton (on England's south coast), where they learned to import fine sausages from the homeland, which they then sold at music festivals around the country for two years before settling down in 19 Villiers St in London, just off the Strand near the club Heaven and Embankment tube station, in 2010. Three years later, in August 2013, they took their Bratwurst (pork and veal), chilli beef (beef and pork), Leberkäse (oven-baked pork), Currywurst and ever popular Bockwurst (smokey pork) to Soho's Old Compton St. Oh so convenient for some. The sausages are free range, gluten-free, lactose-free, with no additives, and prepared by a Black Forest butcher named Fritz. The initially cheap-feeling decor — like a pop-up saloon with circus lighting — belies the high quality of the food here. Even the choice of soft drinks (northern Germany's fritz-kola brand) is select. An excellent choice, particularly if you've had your fill of drink nearby and crave something easy and meaty. And as far as combined cruising and eating, there's a large window of opportunity overlooking Old Compton St. In October 2014 a third and less intimate-feeling branch opened just north, in Fitzrovia, at 43 Charlotte St. Others followed. Sadly, an October 2020 announcement declared that owing to the double whammy of Brexit and COVID, all branches would not be reopening.
