Interviews with elders, staff and long-time patrons, many of them national treasures in their own right, testify to the club’s enduring place in the history of disco and black gay life. It’s not just in London that gentrification and rising rents are tearing apart communities, and this doc – with a great soundtrack of club hits from back in the day – is a warning to anyone who thinks their favourite gay bar is beyond gentrification’s reach. Directors: Kate Kunath, Sasha Wortzel Writer: Kate Kunath QUEER NATION FILM FESTIVAL Queer Nation Film Festival 2017, running 1-3 June 2017, is a pop-up collaboration between the Bernie Grant Arts Centre and long-running club night Queer Nation. Patrick Lilley’s Queer Nation opened in 1990 and has been hosting weekly events in London ever since, with outings and events in Brighton, Manchester, Paris and Milan. In 2002, Queer Nation partnered with mobile network 02 to create a photographic history of LGBT clubbing since World War II. Queer Nation has hosted parties and events at London Pride, as well as community fundraisers and most recently a short film club, Queer Nation Shortz, in collaboration with ArtHertz. Curators of the Queer Nation Film Festival include Patrick Lilley, Dennis Da Silva, Batty Mama, and Hakeem Kazeem for the Bernie Grant Arts Centre.
