Jill has picked up the pieces, and is ‘loyally’ visiting Glen Bulb, who is being detained at Bettle Lodge, an institution for people with psychological problems. In this case, Jill’s lack of financial security and her desire to acquire Glen’s Chip and Pin number are not entirely unrelated. Although according to Doctor Pinder, “he’s the life and soul”, Glen spends much of his time being physically abused by Sandy, one of the inmates.
Don & Cath are living apart, in Bidderclyst in North Cornwall. Cath is working through their marital problems with counselling and guidance from Jacques Du Pont, who heads ‘Trees’, a New Age Therapy Centre. Jacques encourages devotees to ‘find their magnificence’. Whilst attempting to ‘release the clown inside’, Cath is increasingly drawn to Jacques who gives her the much needed support sadly lacking from her sexless marriage.
