*** MARCH ON SEPTEMBER 24TH TO SAVE ELEPHANTS AND RHINOS! ***
On September 24th the world will unite again in the third Global March for Elephants and Rhinos.
Thanks to every person who marched in the past two Global Marches, #GMFER has become a recognised force for change and global awareness. Last year tens of thousands of people united in 130 cities across the world. The march was supported by NGOs and leading conservationists, as well as the United Nations. It sent a strong message to governments to take greater action. Our voices were heard, far and wide, and many positive steps took place over the past year.
The Global Marches were noted by the U.S. Department of State as one of the three big wins for elephants of 2015, saying: “According to experts, these marches keep political pressure on leaders to protect the world’s largest land animal.” https://share.america.gov/elephant-ivory-prices-plummet/
We have seen much progress over the last year, including announced bans on ivory trade by the U.S., China, and Hong Kong, but the situation for elephants and rhinos remains dire. Both continue to be poached at an alarming rate – an elephant is killed every 15 minutes for its ivory, and a rhino every 8 hours for its horn – and the illegal trade in ivory and rhino horn continues to flourish.
★ ★ OUR DEMANDS FOR 2016 ★ ★
This year, the Global March will take place on the opening day of CoP17, the CITES conference in Johannesburg. Crucial decisions about elephants and rhinos and the wildlife trade will be made there. GMFER's objectives this year include the demand for ALL ELEPHANTS AND RHINOS TO BE LISTED ON APPENDIX 1, the CITES list of species that are the most endangered and threatened with extinction. This is a critical listing that would help ensure the survival of elephants and rhinos, as it would prohibit any international trade in their tusks and horns.
• We will also call on CITES to vote AGAINST legalizing rhino horn trade in South Africa.
• We are calling for a global ban on ivory and for all governments to destroy their stockpiles.
• Again we will call on the UK government to implement a complete ban on all ivory trade in the UK. Ivory continues to be traded openly here, without any adequate monitoring or enforcing of the laws for such commerce – laws which are complicated, impossible to enforce, and virtually disregarded by ivory dealers. We will continue to pressure the government to keep its pledge to ban ivory in the UK.
★ THE SLAUGHTER OF ELEPHANTS AND RHINOS, AND THE TRADE IN THEIR TUSKS AND HORNS, MUST END.★
We CAN win this fight, but only if every one of us speaks out. If we don’t unite in protest, don’t bang on the doors of Government to demand laws to protect these endangered species, don’t denounce cruelty and abuse towards them wherever we find it, we will fail them. How will history judge us, if we become the last generation to see them in the wild? How will we judge ourselves?
