This special night collects for the first time Ben's own documentary filmmaking work with cabaret subjects, which has screened at BFI Flare, Outfest, Dirty Looks, MIX Copenhagen | LesbianGayBiTrans Film Festival, GAZE Film Festival Dublin, East End Film Festival, London Short Film Festival and elsewhere.
The half-hour programme will include:
This Is Not a Dream
An excerpt from the 2012 documentary feature, co-directed with Gavin Butt, about how you can change the world with your video camera... or create your own. We'll be showing the hilarious section featuring postpunk homocore legend Vaginal Davis. Includes rare archive footage.
Vinegar to Jam
This 2013 short documentary, co-directed with Edward Lawrenson, was filmed at the iconic Bistrotheque cabaret room on the eve of its closure in 2012. Featuring performance by Jonny Woo and The LipSinkers (Lisa Lee, Blanche Dubois, Rhyannon Styles, Richardette and John Sizzle).
Cut To
In this 2014 short documentary, Tricity Vogue gets her hair cut on stage and creates her own personal gender revolution. Filmed at the Vauxhall Tavern as part of Lisa Lee's groundbreaking experimental platform UnderConstruction.
Plus Q&A about what the moving image can bring to cabaret – a form rooted in live, conversational intimacy.
