Horse Meat Disco (at Eagle London) *

Pleasure-promoting Sunday evening party south of the river
Buzzy weekly event providing happiness and gayness to mixed dance-lovers throbbing to everything from Italo disco to punk-funk, with disco the dominant sound. Conceived in 2003 by DJs James Hillard and Jim Stanton, it's an all-inclusive queer party for homos, heteros and their friends, with not an ounce of prejudice against bears, fashionistas, naturists, guerilla drag queens and ladies who munch. It's also not quite what one would expect of the conventionally manly Eagle pub — and sometimes the room resembles a den of dancing bears — but it somehow works, especially with a very pleasing patio area for cigarette and disco breaks. Seconds away from the Royal Vauxhall Tavern [see entry], minutes from leather bar the Hoist [see entry] and directly across the street from leather shop Master U [see entry]. Tube stations. Tube and, slightly further afield, Oval, (six-minutes walk).

Absolutely unmissable on a Bank Holiday weekend, but get there early!
Horse Meat Disco is held every Sunday at The Eagle. However, it really comes into its own on a Bank Holiday weekend when Londoners have no school the following day. The venue is guaranteed to be rammed with resident DJs serving up a mix of known and lesser known disco classics to a mixed, hugely appreciative and friendly crowd. Nothing can raise the spirits more than disco combined with no work on a Monday! If you're planning a visit on Bank Holiday weekend I cannot emphasise enough that you really must arrive early (30-45mins+ before published opening time is recommended) as there will be a very large queue around the block at opening time.
