London's oldest leather bar
Practically untouched since its April 1985 opening (with dusty boots dangling from the ceiling to prove it), John Edwards's bar Backstreet abides by its strict fetish dress code, and the pay-off for its loyal leather and rubber clientele is an unfussy, dark and atmospheric cruising space — the closest thing London has to an old-style European leather bar. Tall boots guarantee free entry on the last Friday of the month and full rubber does the same on the final Saturday. Includes a small part-heated outdoor smoking area with an industrial and intimate feel. Specialist events include a first-Sunday-of-the-month lycra night Heros (6—10pm), semi-regular BLUF parties (alternates host duties with the Hoist) and occasional fetish- and cigar-friendly Ignite. In January 2014 Brew Hunter started Mastery (a sexier version of BLUF?) and within a year became something of a leatherman in residence here, staging various themed leather nights, plus RUBBRD [sic], started April 2016. There's also naked cruise party Buff, which unveils itself every Wednesday 7–11pm, Saturday 6–10pm and Sunday 6–10pm (except first Saturday of the month). Mega Buff happens here every first Sunday 4–10pm. Lingerie-fetish night Linger joined the club's roster in June 2014 (first Thursday of the month), and men in suits escape from the office every first Tuesday 6–11pm for Backstreet Gentlemen. Plus Spandexguys first Saturday 6–10pm. £25 club membership free for the under-25s.
