Sharing little in common with its massive-screen Leicester Square neighbours, the former single-screen/now-duplex Prince Charles remains a great and reassuring institution for students, the less well-off and anyone drawn to a non-corporate movie house with an eclectic feel for programming. Expect to pay budget prices to see cult, arthouse, indie and classic films alongside recent Hollywood hits. Since 1999 the Prince Charles has hosted spirited, sing-a-long, subtitled screenings of THE SOUND OF MUSIC — a rather camp concept developed earlier that year for the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. The 1961 cinema sits just north of Leicester Square, and is instantly visible owing to its now-iconic sprawling marquis.
